Since arriving at Butler University, I have encountered experiences that have shaped me into the teacher and woman I am today. Throughout my journey at Butler, I have been exposed to diverse learning environments and teaching philosophies in the Indianapolis community. I have been immersed in Montessori classrooms, Reggio-Emilia inspired classrooms, and in classrooms where state standards guide curriculum in a traditional setting.
My experiences at Butler have helped me better understand myself as a teacher, my beliefs about teaching, and my appreciation for students. Teaching is about helping students find their true potential as learners and citizens, regardless of their financial status or cultural backgrounds. Teaching is about developing students to become critical thinkers, regardless of where they are developmentally. Teaching is about embracing and loving each student for his or her unique characteristics. As a Mercy High School alumna, our mission statement is "Women Who Make a Difference". This statement could not be a more perfect verbal representation for my goal in life. I am determined to improve the lives of those I meet. I want to learn and grow from my students, as well as my colleagues. My teaching career is just taking flight, and I have already learned a great deal. I can't wait to see where my journey goes from here. |
